Joan Andrews, our director

Joan, who is now entering her tenth season as artistic director and conductor of Village Voices, graduated from the University of Western Ontario where she specialized in Music Education. Her 30 year career as a vocal and instrumental music teacher with the Scarborough Board of Education/Toronto District School Board culminated at Dr. Norman Bethune C.I. where she was head of the music department before retiring in 1999.

Joan grew up in Ottawa, where  she began her musical studies in piano and flute. Her keen interest in choral music has been inspired by conductors such as Robert Shaw, Sir David Willcocks, Elmer Iseler and Lydia Adams, under whose batons she has had the privilege to work at various points in her career.

Joan is currently assistant conductor of the Amadeus Choir of Greater Toronto where she also sings soprano. She continues to hone her flute playing skills as a member of the Encore Symphonic Concert Band, a Toronto-based ensemble, consisting chiefly of retired professional musicians.

Joan’s strong belief in the value of participating in music-making as a lifetime avocation has led her to play a very active role in Canadian Amateur Musicians/Musiciens Amateurs du Canada (CAMMAC). For a period of over 25 years she has worked as a volunteer on CAMMAC committees to initiate and organize various workshops, music readings and summer music centres for amateur singers and instrumentalists of all ages.
