Who we are

Village Voices Community Choir has served the Markham area since 1989. It is a non-auditioned SATB choir, performing two large concerts every year. We also perform smaller outreach concerts. Our repertoire includes works from a variety of Canadian and international composers, including Ola Gjeilo, Frank Ticheli, Eleanor Daley, Tawnie Olsen, Elaine Hagenberg and Morten Lauridsen, as well as more traditional choral classics.

Under the leadership of Music Director, Shirley Madden, rehearsals are held once a week (Wednesday nights) at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 143 Main Street Markham.

Why do I love singing with the Village Voices?

I love singing with the VV because we have a wonderful group of diverse musical backgrounds and ages, who collectively enjoy just making music together, and striving to work hard and perform for our community.

Why is a Community Choir important for our community?

A community choir is important to the community as it may draw others outside of the community in, appealing to those who just love to sing but who may not have a choir near home, and helping to bring more diverse cultural appeal.

Why do I love singing with the Village Voices?

Music has always played a major part in my life, so I am delighted to have the opportunity to continue by being involved with Village Voices – especially under Shirley Madden’s inspired direction.

Why is a Community Choir important for our community?

Village Voices is in a unique position to share our music with anyone who is willing to listen.  We bring joy to nursing homes, retirement homes, special community events, family and friends.  Not only do we give the gift of music to the community but also we represent the community in our membership.

Other than singing with Village Voices, what do I like to do for fun?

I enjoy walking, swimming, reading and doing jigsaw puzzles.  I enjoy a good meal and a lovely bottle of wine (not all at once, of course) and I continue to work on my cooking skills much to the delight of my kids who are willing to try just about anything I make (at least once).

Why do you love singing with Village Voices of Markham?

I love singing with Village Voices because it’s an opportunity to participate in collaborative singing. The group is so full of life and it’s one of the highlights of my week to see my fellow choristers. The wonderful repertoire picked out for the occasion never disappoints as one cohesive thematic message, and being able to bring it to the stage for our friends and family is such a pleasure!

Other than singing with Village Voices, what do you do for fun?

Besides singing, I spend a lot of my free time reading and playing all sorts of games, ranging from video games, tabletop games, and board games.

We'd love to hear from you!
